We had loads of great entries for our Puffta Time Capsule project, to find out how young gay guys would like to be remembered by future generations. However, Kali from Jordan-Ammam in the Middle East really stood out. He’s been brave enough to try and make a big difference for gay visibility in a largely homophobic country.
Time Capsule! Kali, 19
I've known about Puffta for around two years now, since I was 17. I recently read your proposal, ‘The Time Capsule’. Well, this isn't about being a Brit lad, or the VO5 gifts, as much as it's about being heard, seen and witnessed.
My name is Kali, I'm from Jordan-Amman and 19-years-old. I’m a student, writer and model. In my country I was a fashion model until I was 17, when I got my first article published in Jordan's biggest magazine, Viva. After that I started writing more articles and developing this persona, where I got to be recognised as a writer. Then I started doing art model photos... and sometimes I would model for my own articles.
What I'm trying to lead to is that I started my own project, a gay magazine. Here in Jordan-Amman! Under the name MK mag ‘the first gay magazine in Jordan’, we got really fast recognition from the gay community. That is, until a leak ratted the project out to the mainstream press. After that we were under the spotlight for months. No one here in Jordan-Amman wanted to model our cover, so I volunteered to be featured on the cover and be the magazine's spokesperson, cover boy! My cover was featured in many local newspapers, mostly accompanied by negative, even barbarian criticism. However, at least most of the local magazines and the good media covered the story and opened the ‘gay door’ here in Jordan. You have no idea how crazed the media is about the issue – not just about the magazine but gays in general. We opened a door to discussion, visibility and acceptance. I was the face of it and it was horrible for weeks, hoping that my family would not notice me in the papers. Luckily the didn’t, they thought the cover boy was Spanish teen! If you really search, you'll find about MK mag though all the attention meant we had to cancel the project. Now I do my own thing, My Kali. You can find it at www.mykali.weebly.com
The website hasn’t received as much attention as MK did, but it's more private I suppose. Anyway, I think I’m qualified to say that I did make history, in helping Jordan-Amman be the second Middle Eastern country to openly discuss homosexuality, after Lebanon. Idon't think I'll be making your Puffta list, and it's a shame, cause I love you guys. It's not about countries, it's about all of us gay people. So this is my time capsule and what I would put in it, to be remembered by.
